A very good year

We don’t need much to get us in the mood for wine… a half hour of sunshine, the end of a hard week at work, the promise of a bank holiday weekend. Rewarded with a combination of all of the above, plus the knowledge that it’s London Wine Week, and, well, who could resist a cool, crisp glass of white? Thanks be, then, to Mumtaz Lalani and David Payne of The Good Year, who have just opened up a month-long pop-up dedicated to the grape.

Hosted in the Attendant Café on Shoreditch’s Great Eastern Street, between bustling bars and sandwich shops, this is an altogether more laidback affair, with an informal atmosphere for people more interested in the holy trinity of wine, food and conversation.

It is the first venture from the wine loving pair, who will be offering fine wines by the glass in order to make good wine accessible to city dwelling wine lovers who may not have the knowledge to supplement their passion (and/or levels of consumption). Having regularly found ourselves bamboozled by long wine lists, and incapable of making educated choices, it’s a group we’re not ashamed to affiliate ourselves with.

Wines are served by the glass with tasting sizes also available, and the descriptions are evocative without being intimidating. We had a glass of the light, tongue-twister Spanish Txakoli (guidance with pronunciation helpfully provided) and a fantastic Gruner Veltliner, paired with cheese, charcuterie and hunks of beautifully spongey sourdough.

Mumtaz is knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the wines, having personally handpicked the list, with a focus on biodynamic and smaller producers. The small and perfectly formed menu will be changing regularly throughout the month, so there’s the perfect excuse to visit again! Plus, get yourself down there this weekend, during London Wine Week, show your wristband, and you’ll be treated to a special flight of undiscovered Italian whites.

It’s a great detour for the bank holiday weekend, but even if you can’t make the dates, keep an eye out for The Good Year, we think it’s going to be a great year for them.
