Exhibition: Unseen Icons by Phil Griffin

Until 23 Nov | Brownsword Hepworth Gallery.

It takes a special skill to capture something different in the world’s most photographed. Griffin’s work as a creative director in the entertainment industry enabled him to forge close relationships with his celebrated subjects. In doing so, he got a glimpse of his sitter’s honesty and vulnerability, revealing a level of intimacy few celebrity snappers could get close to. Here, the photographer presents a series of portraits taken over a 25 year period, featuring the famous faces of Diana Ross, Amy Winehouse, Annie Lennox and more. “To me, a good photograph is never taken – but given,” Griffin says. Now, he’s giving us a gem of an exhibition.
